The Minto Pyramid was developed by Barbara Minto for McKinsey consultants to help them structure their reports and maximize their impact on clients.

The Minto Pyramid consists of three levels:

  1. Conclusions
  2. Key arguments
  3. Detailed information

Structuring your information in this way allows you to instantly convey the main point to your audience and then support its value with additional arguments and facts.

A client wants to increase profit. How would you do it?

(For simplicity, let's assume you've worked on the case and the analysis is complete.)

💎 1. Start with the conclusions

Grab your audience's attention early by first telling them the main recommendation, message, or conclusion.

This section should answer the question "What?"

📋 2. Provide key arguments

The second step is to present the key arguments and answer the question "Why?"

Make the arguments relatively short and clear.

Example

  1. Comparative analysis of competitors shows lower purchase costs.
  2. Cheaper and lower quality materials are sufficient for basic products.
  3. Market outlook and the current products do not allow higher prices.

📊 3. Provide additional information and facts

Now it's time to show the facts to back up your arguments. It is important to answer the question "How did you come to these conclusions?"

Sometimes you can skip this part if your key arguments are enough to justify the conclusion. Of course, focus on the audience.

Example

Procurement costs: On average, competitors spend 15% less on materials.

Materials: The quality of suppliers has improved in recent years. Low-cost suppliers offer products of sufficient quality to meet customer needs. We surveyed 34 customers and received information that they do not require or expect the longevity that current products provide.

Prices: The current products are not sufficiently differentiated for higher prices. In addition, the current brand positioning prevents premium pricing.

The advantages of this tool include the following:
